What is Grasshopper Pie?

This recipe for Grasshopper Pie is a no bake recipe packed with a creamy mousse like filling. The grasshopper pie filling is flavored with Creme De Menthe and Creme De Cacao.

Everything is poured into a pie dish with Oreo crust. The green coloring of the pie makes it perfect to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Ingredients

Ingredients for grasshopper pie.- oreo cookies, butter, marshmallow fluff, heavy whipping cream, food coloring, oreos.

For the Crust

  • Oreo Cookies 
  • Unsalted Butter (melted) 

The Filling

  • Marshmallow Fluff
  • Heavy Whipping Cream 
  • Creme De Menthe Liqueur 
  • Green Food Coloring 
  • Oreos (crushed for topping)

Substitutions and Variations

  • Marshmallow Creme. You can use Marshmallow creme instead of marshmallow fluff in this recipe. 
  • Mint Oreos. Mint Oreos work great for this recipe if they are available in your area.  
  • Store bought crust. You can purchase a ready made Oreo crust if you prefer. This will save a few steps if you are in a hurry.
  • Graham Cracker Crust. For less chocolate flavor, substitute a graham cracker crust for the chocolate. You can make one or buy store bought.
  • Cream Cheese. For a tangier mixture, try adding cream cheese to the pie filling. You can try adding ¼ cup to ½ cup cream cheese. Once added, the mixture may need to be thinned slightly with milk or half and half as needed.
  • Topping. Feel free to garnish with chocolate shavings or chocolate curls if desired.

How to Make Grasshopper Pie

  • Step 1. Crush the Oreo cookies. We used a food processor. However, you can also place them in a Ziplock bag and bash with a rolling pin until crumbs are formed.

Step 2. Mix the crushed cookies with melted butter.

Step 3. Press the cookie crumbs mixture into a pie plate. I like to use the bottom of a glass cup for this. Place in the fridge as you make the filling.

Step 4. Get out a large bowl and beat the cream. with a hand held or stand mixer until stiff peaks form.  Set aside.

Step 5. Melt the marshmallow creme in a microwave safe mixing bowl to soften it. Add the creme de menthe liqueur and creme de cacao liqueur. Add the green food coloring to the mixture until it’s the color that you prefer. Combine with a rubber spatula.

Step 6. Gently fold in the whipped cream.

Mixture poured into pie dish and topped with crushed cookies.

Step 7. Pour the mixture into the prepared Oreo cookie crust.  Spread out the top of the filling to make it smooth. Sprinkle crushed Oreos on top. Let the pie set at room temperature for 5-10 minutes before serving. Cut with a sharp knife.

How to serve grasshopper pie?

Allow the pie to come to room temperature before serving. We like to serve each slice with whipped cream and a whole Oreo cookie on top. This is optional and you can definitely do what you prefer!

Can I make Grasshopper Pie Non-Alcoholic?

Yes, this pie can easily be made non-alcoholic. Omit the Crème De Menthe and Creme De Cacao liquor.

Substitute ¾ teaspoon peppermint extract and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Combine as normal.

Pro Tips

  • The alcohol does not cook off in this recipe, so keep that in mind when serving to children.  You can make this non alcoholic. See note above with instructions.
  • Store the pie in the freezer until ready to serve.  The leftover pie will keep in the freezer for 3-4 days.  
  • It is easiest to use a food processor to make the crust. However, a ziplock bag will work just fine. Simply add the cookies to a ziplock bag and seal. Use the back of a spoon or rolling pin to crush into crumbs.

Instructions

  • For the Crust:
  • Crush the Oreo cookies in a food processor. Or place them in a Ziplock bag and bash with a rolling pin until crumbs are formed.
  • Mix the crushed cookies with melted butter.
  • Press into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate. I like to use the bottom of a glass cup for this.
  • Place in the fridge as you make the filling.
  • For the Filling:
  • Pour the heavy whipping cream into a chilled bowl and beat with a hand held or stand up mixer until stiff peaks are forward.  Set aside.
  • Pour the marshmallow creme into a microwave safe mixing bowl.  Heat the marshmallow creme for 30 seconds to soften it.  Then stir in the creme de menthe liqueur and creme de cacao liqueur. Add the green food coloring to the mixture until it’s the color that you prefer.
  • Gently fold in the whipped cream and pour the mixture into the prepared Oreo crust.  Spread out the top of the filling to make it smooth. Sprinkle crushed Oreos on top.
  • Freeze until the pie is set (at least 2 hours).
  • When ready to serve, let the pie set at room temperature for 5-10 minutes.  Then it’s ready to slice and serve!
