Ingredients

Ingredients for Football Cookies - flour, baking powder, butter, sugar, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, icing.

  • All-Purpose Flour — versatile flour ideal for most baking recipes, providing structure and texture. It’s best to spoon the flour instead of scooping it and level with a knife.
  • Baking Powder — a leavening agent that helps baked goods rise and become light and fluffy.
  • Unsalted Butter (softened at room temperature) — adds rich flavor and moisture; softening ensures easy mixing and smooth batter.
  • Granulated Sugar — standard white sugar used to sweeten and tenderize baked goods.
  • Vanilla Extract — pure vanilla flavoring that enhances the taste of baked treats.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder — provides deep chocolate flavor without added sweetness.
  • White Decorating Icing — used for piping or decorating cookies with a clean, crisp white finish.

Step By Step Instructions

Dry ingredients in a large bowl.

Step 1. Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk together the flour, teaspoon salt and baking powder.

Butter and sugar creamed together.

Step 2. Cream the butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl. Beat together the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and unsweetened cocoa powder until butter mixture is combined and smooth. You can use either a stand mixer or a handheld mixer.  Scrape the sides of the bowl.

Flour mixed into the bowl.

Step 3. Gradually add in the flour mixture and mix until combined.  Be careful not to over mix the batter.  Chill the dough for at least 1 hour (or overnight).

Dough rolled out and cut into shapes.

Step 4. Pull the cookie dough out of the refrigerator and sit it out to soften up a bit. Put flour on the wood cutting board, rub flour on the rolling pin, and work some flour into the batter (if needed). Use a football shaped cookie cutter to begin to make your cookies.

Step 5. Prepare the pan with parchment paper. Using a metal spatula move the cut cookies to the parchment lined cookie sheet. Since you chilled the dough, the cookies should hold their shape as you move them.

Step 6. Bake the cookies for 9-11 minutes until the edges on the cookies are firm.

Cookies on wire rack.

Step 7. Take the cookies off of the baking sheet and put on a wire rack to cool completely. This will take about 10 minutes total time.

Step 8. Once the cookies have cooled, add the details and laces on the cookies with the white icing.  Let the icing cool and then the cookies are ready to serve and enjoy!

Pro Tips

  • Icing Options: We used store-bought decorator icing for convenience, but you can also use white frosting or royal icing depending on your preference. For precise decorating, piping bags are essential to create clean lines and detailed football designs.
  • Mix Gently: Avoid overmixing the cookie dough. Stir just until the ingredients are combined to keep the cookies tender and prevent them from becoming tough.
  • Cool Completely Before Decorating: Allow cookies to cool fully before adding icing. Decorating warm cookies can cause the icing to melt or run, resulting in messy designs.
  • Chill the Dough: Refrigerate the cookie dough for at least one hour, but overnight chilling is ideal. This firms up the dough, making it easier to roll out and cut into perfect football shapes without sticking or tearing.
  • Personalize Your Cookies: Use the same decorator icing you use for the football design to write names or messages on each cookie. This adds a fun, personal touch for parties or gifts.
  • Practice Piping: If you’re new to decorating, practice piping lines and shapes on parchment paper before working on the cookies. This helps you gain control and confidence.
  • Use Parchment Paper: Always bake cookies on parchment-lined sheets to prevent sticking and promote even baking.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: For best flavor, use fresh spices and pure vanilla extract. Unsweetened cocoa powder should be fresh for a rich chocolate taste.
  • Add Texture: Consider sprinkling a little sanding sugar or edible glitter on the icing before it sets for extra sparkle and fun.

Storage

Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 to 7 days. I suggest placing a piece of parchment paper in between the layers of cookies to prevent them from sticking.

Make sure the icing has completely cooled before placing in the container. You can freeze the cookies inside a freezer bag or container up to 2 months.
