Ingredients

Ingredients for Red, White and Blue Muddy Buddies - Chex cereal, peanut butter, red candy melts, blue candy melts, red, white and blue M&Ms.
  • Chex Cereal. I used Rice Chex Cereal but you can use corn if you prefer.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter. Creamy peanut butter combines for the best consistency.
  • Red Candy Melts and Blue Candy Melts. Find these in the baking section.
  • Gallon Ziplock Bags. You will need these to combine the ingredients.
  • Red White and Blue M&M’s. This adds the perfect seasonal touch!

Find the entire ingredients for this snack mix recipe at the bottom of the page.

Variations

  • Seasonal. You can use different colors for other holidays.
  • Nuts. Try adding, pecans, peanuts or walnuts.
  • Sprinkles. Toss in festive sprinkles to the mixture when you add the M&M’s.
  • Morsels. Chocolate chips, white chocolate chips or peanut butter morsels make a great add in.

Step By Step Instructions

Blue candy melts melted in a bowl.

Step 1. Start by melting the blue candy. Use a microwave safe bowl and combine the blue candy melts, peanut butter and oil.  Then microwave for 30 seconds. Continue to cook in 15 second increments until melted.

Mixture coated on cereal.

Step 2. Pour the melted chocolate over the cereal. Use a large bowl and pour the melted peanut butter and candy mixture over the cereal and coat.

Cereal coated in powdered sugar and spread on baking sheet.

Step 3. Use a gallon ziplock bag and pour in the powdered sugar.  Then pour the coated cereal into the bag.  Seal and shake to coat the cereal. Then spread the cereal on a baking sheet. Finally, repeat with the red candy melts.

Step 4. Once the red and blue mixture is cool, sprinkle the M&Ms over the top and combine.

Storage

Store leftover Patriotic Puppy Chow Recipe inside an airtight food storage container for up to a week and enjoy. Ours never lasts that long though because we eat it so quickly.

It is ok out for a day or so, but it will keep longer in the fridge and stay moist.

If Patriotic Muddy Buddies is stored in an airtight container at room temperature, it will last up to 2 weeks.

Pro Tips

  • Cover the cereal mixture completely. Make sure to coat the cereal entirely in the peanut butter mixture so the powdered sugar will stick.
  • Toss inside a Ziploc bag. The mixture is messy with the powdered sugar and using a plastic bag makes this much easier than a bowl.
  • Measure correctly. If you have too much cereal, there will not be enough chocolate to coat all of the cereal.
  • Allow to cool. Let the mixture cool before adding the M&M’s candy.
  • Make in advance. We love doubling the Chex mix recipe when we make it so we can freeze it. When you are ready to serve, take out of the freezer and it is good cold or at room temperature.

I would like to know where you bought your red, white and blue M&Ms. I wanted to do the St. Patrick’s Day Puppy Chow and couldn’t find just green M&Ms. I haven’t looked for the red, white and blue ones yet, but I just bet I can’t find them.

    1. Carrie says:

We got them at our local grocery store in the candy aisle. They are usually only available around the 4h of July.

    2. Cyndy says:

Wal Mart has them not big bag but I bought 5 littles …also have them in minis and peanut butter
