Why Is Texas Known For Pecan Pie?

The pecan tree is native to Texas. It is the state tree and prevalent all over the state. Fresh Texas pecans make the best desserts, but you don’t have to be Texans to enjoy.

Ingredients

Ingredients for pecan pie - pie crust, eggs, corn syrup, vanilla extract, milk, flour, butter, pecans.
  • Pie Crust. Unbaked pie crust.
  • Eggs. Use room temperature large eggs.
  • Light Corn Syrup. This gives the pie filling its delicious texture.

Pro Tips

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients. Fresh pecans and good-quality butter make a big difference in flavor and texture. Avoid stale nuts or low-quality ingredients for the best results.
  • Don’t overbake. The filling should be set but still slightly gooey, and the pecans on top should stay golden, not burnt. Keep an eye on the pie during the last few minutes of baking.
  • Cool before slicing. Let the pie cool completely to room temperature before cutting. This ensures clean, neat slices that hold their shape.
  • Protect the crust. If the edges of the pie shell brown too quickly, cover them with foil to prevent burning while the filling finishes baking.
  • Room temperature ingredients. Using room temperature eggs and butter helps the filling mix evenly and bake uniformly.

Storage

Room Temperature: Store the pie covered loosely with foil or plastic wrap at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Refrigerator: Keep in the fridge for up to 4–5 days in an airtight container or wrapped tightly. This helps maintain the filling’s texture and keeps the pecans fresh.

Freezer: Texas pecan pie can be frozen for up to 2 months. Wrap the pie tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving. Learn how to freeze pecan pies.

Serving Tip: Let refrigerated or frozen pies come to room temperature for about 30 minutes before slicing for clean, even pieces.
