Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe - pie crust, apple pie filling, egg, powdered sugar, milk.
  • Refrigerated Store-bought Pie Crusts: These make the recipe quick and easy.
  • Apple Pie Filling: Use store-bought or homemade filling. It works beautifully either way.
  • Large Egg: For the egg wash to give the pies a golden, glossy finish.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sift if lumpy to ensure a smooth glaze.
  • Milk: Whole milk is preferred for the glaze, but any milk will work.

Variations

  • Pie Filling. Other ideas include Homemade Cherry Pie Filling, strawberry pie filling, blueberry filling and peach.
  • Topping. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top instead of using the glaze. Cinnamon and Sugar make a great topping as well.

Step By Step Instructions

Bowl with egg wash.

Step 1. Use a small bowl and beat the egg and water together. Set this aside for later.

Dough with circles cut out.

Step 2. Next, roll out the pie crusts with a rolling pin.  Use a circle cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut out small circles.

Filling added to each circle.

Step 3. Add the apple pie filling to the center. I used about a tablespoon of the apple pie filling. Make sure to leave ½ inch edge around the outside.

Dough folded to make half circle and slits cut out.

Step 4. Form a half circle by folding each of the pie crusts.  Seal the edges together with your fingers or with a fork. Use a small knife to cut a small X into the top center of each prepared pie.

Pro Tips

  • Avoid non-stick cooking sprays: Do not use aerosol non-stick sprays in your air fryer basket, as they can leave a residue over time. Instead, lightly brush the basket with olive oil.
  • Cook in batches: Don’t overcrowd the basket. Depending on your air fryer’s size, you may need to cook the hand pies in multiple batches to ensure even cooking and browning.
  • Don’t overfill: Keep the filling moderate to prevent it from leaking out during cooking.
  • Seal the edges well: Press the edges firmly with a fork to prevent filling from oozing out.
  • Check for doneness early: Air fryers vary in heat, so start checking a minute or two before the recommended time to avoid over-browning.
  • Cool slightly before glazing: Let the pies rest for a few minutes after cooking to allow the filling to set and prevent the glaze from sliding off.

Do not use a non-stick cooking spray in your air fryer basket as it will cause build up in your basket.  We recommend using a spray olive oil or rubbing olive oil into the basket of the air fryer.
