Variations
- Popcorn. I used microwave popcorn for this recipe, but you can definitely use whichever is your favorite! Feel free to use store bought popcorn if you prefer.
- Sprinkles. This is optional but sometimes I like to add sprinkles to the top of the popcorn. It makes this treat even more festive.
- Chocolate. Switch things up and use milk chocolate instead of white chkocolmate. The combination with crushed peppermint is another fun flavor twist.
- Peanuts. Toss in a handful of peanuts in this popcorn mixture for a tasty twist.
- Pretzels. Sprinkle candy cane pieces in the popcorn.
- Drizzle Chocolate. Drizzle milk chocolate on top of the popcorn while it’s on the baking sheet. This will make the recipe even more decadent and look amazing as well.
How to Make Candy Cane Popcorn
- Step 1 – Prepare the popcorn. Place popcorn on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. You will likely need 2 baking sheets.

Step 2 – Melt the chocolate. Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20 second increments in the microwave, stirring after heat interval until melted and combined. Stir in approximately ½ cup of the crushed candy canes.

Step 3 – Coat the popcorn. Pour this mixture over the popcorn. Toss the popcorn to thoroughly coat it with the milk chocolate mixture.

Step 4 – Top with candy canes. Sprinkle the remaining crushed candy canes on top of the popcorn.

Step 5 – Allow to set. Let the popcorn sit at room temperature until the white chocolate hardens. Then break the popcorn into pieces and enjoy! Pour into a very large bowl and enjoy the perfect snack.

Storage
Store in an airtight container at room temperature. You can also use a ziplock bag.
It will last up to a week if stored properly. However, it is best enjoyed within 2 to 3 days, or it will start to get soggy, and the texture will change.
Pro Tips
- Lined baking sheet. Use waxed paper to line the baking sheet before spreading the coated popcorn. It will make cleanup much easier.
- Kernels. Pick out any un popped popcorn kernels from the popcorn before coating in chocolate. You don’t want any of this in the mix.
- Chocolate. Melt the white chocolate in intervals using the microwave. This will prevent the chocolate from burning. Make sure to stir between the intervals.
- Candy Canes. Easily crush candy canes using a food processor. The candy canes should be small but not fine dust. If you do not have a food processor, place them inside a bag and use a rolling pin.
