Christmas Truffles are so easy to make and such a cute Christmas dessert. The truffle mixture is rich and creamy. The white chocolate coating taste great and the sprinkles look so festive.

While they sound fancy, it’s very easy to make truffles. I have been making Sugar Cookie Truffles, Strawberry Truffles, Lemon Truffles and Pumpkin Spice Truffles for years.

Why we love this recipe

This truffle recipe only calls for a handful of ingredients and no cream cheese. The results are so delicious. The texture is smooth and creamy.

It’s inexpensive to make and doesn’t take long at all. You don’t need a double boiler. They make a great gift!

  • Unsalted Butter, room temperature
  • White Cake Mix 
  • Vanilla Extract 
  • Christmas Sprinkles
  • White Chocolate Chips

Christmas truffle Variations:

  • Cake flavors. Instead of vanilla cake, use Red Velvet Cake, chocolate cake, coconut or any flavor you like. Chocolate cake would make delicious chocolate truffles.
  • Chocolate. You can easily make these with your favorite type of chocolate if you’re not a fan of white chocolate.  Try using dark chocolate or milk chocolate with cocoa powder.
  • Christmas Cake Pops. Turn these cake balls into cake pops by inserting a popsicle stick before coating.
  • Candy Melts. Dip the cake balls in melted candy coating using Christmas colors. I like to use Christmas tree colors.
  • Sprinkles. We used red candy sprinkles and green sprinkles. However, you can enjoy these year round by changing the sprinkles color.
  • Nuts. Top the truffles with chopped pecans or walnuts. This is delicious. Make sure to do this when the cake pops are still wet or it will not stick.
  • Extract. Add peppermint extract to the mixture for a new flavor.

How to make Christmas Truffles:

Step 1. Combine the filling in a large bowl. Stir together the white cake mix and the sugar.  Then stir in the butter and vanilla to the cake batter.

Step 2. Gradually add in the milk until the dough is combined but still thick enough to hold its shape. Then stir in most of the Christmas Sprinkles. Make sure to reserve 2 Tbsp of the sprinkles for topping.

Step 3. Shape the cake balls into 1 inch size balls. Then place on a baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Step 4. Melt the chocolate in the microwave. Heat in 20 second intervals (stirring after each interval) until the chocolate is fully melted.

Step 5. Dip the cake balls in the chocolate.  Remove excess by tapping the fork on the side of the bowl.

Step 6. Once coated in chocolate, place a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Top each one with the reserved sprinkles. Do this right away so they stick. Allow to set int he fridge before serving.

How to dip cake balls:

  • The bite size cake balls need to be cold before dipping into chocolate. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and they should be ready to go.
  • Dip the cake ball into melted chocolate instead of swirling.
  • Remove any excess chocolate by gently tapping the fork on the side of the bowl.

Decorating ideas:

  • Crushed candy canes. Skip the sprinkles and use crushed candy cane on top.
  • Drizzled candy melts. Melt red and green candy coating. Drizzle with a fork on top of the cake balls for a festive design.
  • Sprinkles. Get creative and use different types of sprinkles to decorate the cake balls for your holiday party.

How to store?

These are best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. 

Can you make these in advance?

You can freeze the truffles if you need to make these ahead of time. Just store them in an airtight freezer container.

They can be frozen up to 3 months. When ready to serve, allow to thaw in the fridge.

Tips:

  • Raw flour. If you are worried about consuming raw flour from the cake mix, pour the cake mix on a baking sheet and bake it for 5 minutes at 350 degrees.  Allow the cake mix to cool and then make the recipe as outlined. 
  • Cookie Scoop. Make the cake balls quickly and easily using a cookie scoop. Not only is this quicker but it makes each one uniform.

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, stir together the white cake mix and the sugar.  Then stir in the butter and vanilla.  Gradually add in the milk until the dough is combined but still thick enough to hold its shape. Then stir in most of the Christmas Sprinkles (reserve 2 Tbsp for topping)
  • Form the dough into 1 inch size balls, place them on a baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.  Heat in 20 second intervals (stirring after each interval) until the chocolate is fully melted.
  • Dip each of the balls in the chocolate.  Gently remove them with a fork.  Tap the fork on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate.  Place the chocolate coated truffles on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Top each one with the reserved sprinkles. Work quickly to make sure that the sprinkles are placed on before the chocolate hardens.
  • Then refrigerate for 20 minutes to allow the chocolate to set.
