Storage and Freezing Instructions

We prefer to make this frosting fresh and use it right away because of the chocolate chips. However, it will keep in the fridge up to 5 days if stored inside an airtight container.

Likewise, it can be frozen up to 2 months inside a good freezer container. When you are ready to use the frosting, allow to thaw in the fridge overnight. Then let it come to room temperature.

Finally, stir everything to remix the ingredients. This will help the frosting to be the correct texture and really creamy. This method is a great way to save time for parties and events.

Expert Tips

  • Sift the powdered sugar. If your powdered sugar has a lot of lumps, we suggest sifting it first. This will help the frosting to have the best consistency.
  • Cream the Butter and Sugar. Make sure to combine these two ingredients separately and beat until fluffy. This will ensure it is a creamy texture.
  • The Frosting will need to be applied differently due to the chocolate chips. Since this frosting has chocolate chips inside, you can’t really pipe it unless you use a large tip. It is better to spread it on the baked goods or scoop.
  • Add the chocolate chips later. If you have your heart set on piping the frosting, omit the chocolate chips and pipe as normal. Then sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.
  • Don’t Scoop the flour when measuring. Spoon the flour into the measuring cup for best results. This will ensure it is accurately measured and not too much flour pressed into the cup.
  • Try other chocolate varieties. You can substitute the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips, mini M&M’s or regular size chocolate chips.
  • Nuts make a great mix-in. Substitute the chocolate chips for nuts or add them with the other ingredients. We love chopped walnuts and pecans.
  • Heat treated flour. The internal temperature of the heat treated flour needs to be 165 degrees. Then you can add it to the other ingredients.

This is when it is safe to consume. You can use an instant read thermometer.

If you test the flour and it is a lower temperature in some areas, stir and heat for additional time. Start with another minute until it reaches the correct temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the Cookie Dough Buttercream tastes too sweet?

The salt in the recipe will cut down on the sweetness of this frosting. If you find that it is still too sweet for your liking, you can add another pinch of salt. Please do this sparingly as a little goes a long way and you don’t want to add too much.

What to do if the frosting is too thick?

The frosting is very thick but if it is too thick, simply add a teaspoon of milk and combine. Continue to do this until the desired consistency.

Do not add a lot at once or you risk thinning the frosting too much.
It is best to gradually add the milk and combine each time until it is thin enough to use.

Can I substitute the milk for something else?

Heavy cream and half in half both make suitable substitutes for the frosting. You can also use a non dairy substitute such as almond milk.

Do I have to refrigerate the frosting?

This frosting does not have to be refrigerated and can sit out for 2 to 3 days if covered properly. However, we normally place the frosting in the fridge so it lasts longer.

When you are ready to serve, allow to come to room temperature for best taste.

What is heat treated flour?

This is flour that has been baked to kill any bacteria before using. It only takes about 3 to 5 minutes in a 350 degree oven for this process.

Just make sure to allow the flour to cool completely before using to make the edible cookie dough.
