Expert Tips

  • Softened butter. Make sure to start with butter that has been softened. I normally leave it at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will make it easier to combine and have a smoother texture.
  • Sift the powdered sugar. To ensure the frosting is really smooth, sift the powdered sugar to remove any lumps. This will make for a smooth combination with the butter.
  • Allow to soften at room temperature before using. The frosting should be stored in the fridge so that it is chilled. Allow it to soften slightly at room temperature before using.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my frosting is too sweet?

Buttercream frosting is a very sweet frosting and even more so with nutella added in. If you find this too sweet, add a pinch of salt to cut down on the sweetness.

Be very careful that you do not add too much or it can ruin the frosting. I suggest adding a very tiny pinch of salt, combining and tasting. You can always add more if needed.

What if my frosting turned out too thick?

Gradually add 1 teaspoon of cream at a time to the frosting if it is too thick. Continue to add until it is the desired consistency that you prefer.

It is important to add the cream in small amounts gradually, so you do not add too much.

What if my frosting turned out too thin?

The first step is to refrigerate the frosting. Thin frosting might be a result of the butter softening too much. After you refrigerate the frosting for an hour, check the consistency.

If it is still too thin, add ½ cup powdered sugar and combine. Continue to do this until it is thick and the preferred texture.

What to substitute for the milk?

Feel free to use half and half, almond milk or another milk substitute, heavy cream or milk in this recipe.
