What is Dulce De Leche?
It is very similar to caramel but consists of different ingredients. Dulce de Leche is made from sweetened condensed milk. Whereas caramel is made from sugar and water.
Ingredients

- Heavy whipping cream. This is the base for the recipe and helps to make it rich and delicious.
- Dulce de leche. It is perfectly sweetened from the dulce de leche.
- Crushed waffle cone pieces. This is optional but adds a nice crunch to the texture. The waffle cone pairs nicely with the base.

How to Make Dulce De Leche Ice Cream

Step 1. Whip the cream in a large mixing bowl. Use an electric hand mixer to whip the cream until soft peaks begin to form.

Step 2. Add the remaining dulce de leche and waffle cone pieces. Combine this with the heavy cream. Use the hand mixer to combine the ingredients until well blended.

Step 3. Pour into a pan. Transfer the custard base into a 9×11 loaf pan and cover with plastic wrap. Freeze the ice cream for at least 5 hours.

Step 4. Then serve and enjoy.
Storage
Store the creamy ice cream inside an airtight container in the freezer. To ensure freshness, you might also want to put a piece of wax paper directly on top of the ice cream. Then place the lid on top.
This extra step will help to prevent ice crystals from forming on top.
If you do not have a container with lid, you can freeze in the loaf pan. Just cover tightly with plastic wrap.
How Long Will Homemade Ice Cream Last?
It will last up to 3 months if stored properly.
Expert Tips
- The waffle cone pieces are completely optional but add a fun crunch of texture to the recipe.
- You can make homemade dulce de leche. If you do not have access to canned dulce de leche, you can use a 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk. Simply cook the condensed milk on the stove using medium low heat until it browns.
- The dulce de leche and heavy whipping cream make this recipe super rich and sweet. You definitely can feel satisfied with just a small bowl.
- If the ice cream is difficult to scoop, allow it to come to room temperature by sitting on the counter a few minutes.
- Start with a cold mixing bowl. I like to place the bowl in the freezer briefly before beating the cream. It helps to whip this faster and to form the ice cream base.
- Don’t overmix the heavy whipping cream. You only want to blend until stiff peaks form.
- If you are having trouble finding dulce de leche, look on the baking aisle at the grocery store. It is most often located with the sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk.
