Why We Love This Recipe

These Halloween pretzel monster eyeballs are loaded with sweet and salty flavor. We love that these pretzel treats can be made with a variety of ingredients.

Top these pretzel treats with M&M, candy eye, or a Hershey Kiss for a fun twist on this great treat.

Ingredients

  • Snaps Pretzels. The square pretzels work best for this recipe.
  • Hershey Hugs Candy. The chocolate and white swirls look perfect when they melt.
  • Large Flat Candy Eyeballs. These add a festive touch. Find them in the baking aisle.
  • Red Sanding Sugar. Just a little sprinkle is all you need.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Change Candy – You can easily use Rolo candy or a peanut butter candy instead of a chocolate candy kiss to top the pretzel. Candy corn would also be a fun variation.
  • Pretzel – Instead of the square pretzels, you can make this with the standard shaped pretzel. Feel free to also use chocolate covered pretzels.

Step by Step Instructions

  • Step 1 – Preheat the oven. It should be set to 200 degrees F.

Step 2 – Spread the pretzels out a baking sheet. I like to use parchment paper to line the pan.

Step 3. Remove all the Hugs wrappers and place a Hug on top of each pretzel.

Hugs gently pressed on the pretzels.

Step 4. Bake until slightly melted in a preheated oven for 3 to 5 minutes. Bake until the Hugs are slightly melted but still keep most of their shape.

Sprinkles added on top.

Step 5. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the sanding sugar on top.

Candy eyeballs added to each pretzel.

Step 6. Gently press a candy eyeball on each of the melted chocolate.

Step 7. The pretzels need to cool completely. They will cool at room temperature, but you can also place them in the refrigerator for 1 hour. This allows for the chocolate to harden.

Expert Tips

  • Baking Treats – Don’t overbake and watch closely. The Hugs should be soft but not entirely melted.
  • Prepare Baking Sheet – Line the rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. This will make cleanup much easier.
  • After Baking – To make sure the candy eye and sprinkles stick, immediately add to the Hug Candy.
  • Chocolate Chips – Use chocolate chips instead of candy eyes on the Hershey Kiss.
