Variations and Substitutions

Step by Step instructions

Step 1. Get out a medium saucepan and whisk together sugar, cornstarch and salt.

Milk added to pan.

Step 2. Next, whisk in the milk and bring to a boil over medium heat. Make sure to stir constantly. Allow to cook for 2 minutes.

Step 3. Get out a separate large bowl and a hand mixer. Add the egg yolks and lightly beat them with an electric mixer.  Then stir in 1 cup of milk mixture from the saucepan into the eggs.

Step 4. Slowly whisk the egg mixture back into the saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat to low.  Cook and stir for 2 more minutes. Then remove from the heat and stir in butter and vanilla.

Step 5. Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor or blender and process until the Oreos are crushed.  Fold half of the crushed Oreos into the pudding mixture until well combined.

Step 6. Transfer to serving dishes with a rubber spatula and chill.

Step 7. Add toppings when ready to serve. Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos, whipped cream and whole Oreo.

Storage

Refrigerate any leftovers, covered, for up to 2-3 days.

FAQs

Can you make this in advance?

Feel free to make the pudding up to 2 days in advance and store in the fridge. Wait to add the cookie crumbs until ready to serve. If you add the oreo crumbs too soon, it will get soggy.

Can you make this in a baking dish instead of individual cups?

Yes, this recipe can be served in a 9×13 baking dish if you do not want to use individual cups.

Expert Tips

  • Crush the Cookies easily. If you do not have a food processor, place the cookies inside a ziploc bag. Crush with a rolling pin.
  • Stir constantly after boiling. Make sure to stir constantly for 2 minutes for the correct texture.
  • Whole milk is best. Whole milk will give the pudding the richest flavor.

Instructions

  • Whisk together sugar, cornstarch and salt in a medium saucepan.
  • Whisk in milk and bring to a boil over medium heat stirring constantly. Allow to cook for 2 minutes.
  • Place the egg yolks in a separate bowl and lightly beat them.  Then stir in 1 cup of milk mixture from the sauce pan into the eggs and then slowly whisk the egg mixture back into the saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil and reduce the heat to low.  Cook and stir for 2 more minutes.

  • Place the 8 Oreo cookies in a food processor or blender and process until the Oreos are crushed.  Stir half of the crushed Oreos into the pudding mixture until well combined.

  • When serving toppings with the remaining crushed Oreos, whipped cream and whole Oreo.
  • Serve cold and enjoy!
