What is puppy chow?

Puppy Chow is a popular homemade snack mix. It consists of chex cereal that is coated traditionally in peanut butter, melted semi sweet chocolate chips and powdered sugar.

You might also hear this referred to as Muddy Buddies.

There are many variations with tasty flavor twists. This new recipe for Red Velvet Puppy Chow is so decadent and really pretty too. The cereal is coated in melted cream cheese icing, powdered sugar and red velvet cake mix.

Ingredients

  • Chex Cereal. You can use rice or corn variations.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting. Store bought or Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe.
  • Red Velvet Cake Mix. Any brand is fine.
  • Powdered Sugar. Sift to remove any lumps.
  • Red, White and Pink Sprinkles. This is optional but so pretty.

How to Make Red Velvet Puppy Chow

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Spread the red velvet cake mix on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes.  Then allow the cake mix to cool before using.

Step 2. Melt the frosting. Place the cream cheese frosting in a large microwave-safe bowl.  Heat the frosting in 20 second intervals until melted. Make sure that you stir after each interval. Then gently fold the cereal with a spatula until it’s coated with the cream cheese frosting.

Step 3. Next, pour the cooled red velvet cake mix and powdered sugar in a sealed bag.  Shake to thoroughly combine the 2 in the bag. Remove the coated puppy chow and spread it out onto the baking sheet to cool.  Continue this process until all the cereal is coated and the puppy chow is made.

Step 4. Let the puppy chow cool completely.  Then toss in the sprinkles right before serving. White chocolate chips are also delicous mixed in.  

Storage

Keep the leftover puppy chow in an airtight plastic bag or container at room temperature. Either option is great for storing Red Velvet Muddy Buddies.

How long will puppy chow last?

If stored properly, puppy chow will last up to 5 days. We eat this pretty fast, so it never lasts too long around here. Everyone loves it!

Pro Tips

  • Sprinkles. Don’t add the sprinkles until the mixture has cooled. You do not want the color to melt.
  • Bake the dry cake mix before using. It is important to heat treat the flour in the cake mix before using in this recipe.
  • Combine thoroughly. Shake the ingredients together really well in a large ziploc bag. You want all of the cereal coated well.

Instructions

  • Spread the 2 cups of red velvet cake mix on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes.  Then allow the cake mix to cool before using.

  • Remove the coated puppy chow and spread it out onto the baking sheet to cool.  Continue this process until all the cereal is coated and the puppy chow is made.
  • Let the puppy chow cool completely.  Then toss in the sprinkles right before serving.
  • Then the red velvet puppy chow is ready to serve and enjoy!
