Do you call it Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies?

This recipe goes by different names. We call it puppy chow but some call them muddy buddies.  What do you call it?

Regardless of names, this is one delicious treat and so easy to make. I don’t know if it is regional or perhaps what you grew up calling it, but I have heard it called both puppy chow and muddy buddies.

This is one of the reasons we love this recipe. It is so fun and easy to mix up and try new things.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1 – Melt Almond Bark – Melt the almond bark is a microwave-safe bowl until completely melted.

Step 2 – Add cereal to bowl – Place the Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl.

Pouring the melted white chocolate over the chex cereal.

Step 3 – Add chocolate to cereal – Pour the melted bark gently over the Chex cereal and stir gently to not break the cereal. Make sure the cereal is coated in the large bowl.

Step 4 – Add the sprinkles – Add sprinkles to the cereal and chocolate mixture.

Step 5 – Add cake mix to gallon size bag- Pour the cake mix into a gallon size zip lock bag. Pour the almond bark covered Chex into the ziplock bag. Seal bag and shake.

Step 6 – Cool, Serve and Enjoy – Allow to cool and serve. Store In an air tight container. It’s that simple. We recommend pouring the puppy chow on a baking sheet covered in parchment paper to cool.

Expert Tips

  • Change Chocolate – You can different melting chocolate to make these recipes. Try white chocolate chips, dark chocolate, or milk chocolate to change the flavoring.
  • Add in Different Color Sprinkles – Add in sprinkles for the holiday or birthday you are celebrating. Use pastel colors for Easter or Red and Green for Christmas.
  • Covering the Chex Mix – To make sure that cereal and powder sugar stick to the chex mix, add the melted almond bark before it hardens or cools.
  • Make a Large Batch – Birthday Party Puppy chow is so addicting no mater the holiday we make it. So I always make a large batch.
  • Use Candy Melts – If you want a different color, use candy melts.

Do you need to Refrigerate Puppy Chow?

It is ok out for a day or so but it will keep longer in the fridge. Like I said, we eat this super fast because it is a treat we all love! Puppy chow is so good and the kids absolutely love it.

Yes, this is the perfect dessert to make ahead of time. We love doubling the recipe when we make it so we can freeze it. When you are ready to serve, take out of the freezer and it is good cold or at room temperature.

What Chex Mix is good for Puppy Chow?

The Chex Mix cereal that we used for this recipe is rice but you can use corn as well. I usually stick with these two Chex Mix cereal so that it doesn’t change the flavoring of the puppy chow.

How to Store Birthday Cake Puppy Chow:

Store in an airtight container for up to a week and enjoy. Ours never lasts that long though because we eat it quickly. We really love it.

Ingredients

  • 9 cups Rice Chex Cereal
  • 16 oz Almond Bark Melted
  • 4 oz Multi-Colored Sprinkles
  • 1 Box Funfetti Cake Mix

Instructions

  • Place 9 cups Rice Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl, being careful not to crush the cereal.
  • Break 16 ounces almond bark into pieces and place it in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until completely melted and smooth.
  • Pour the melted almond bark evenly over the cereal. Gently stir until the cereal is evenly coated, taking care not to break the pieces.
  • Place 1 box Funfetti cake mix in a 1-gallon zip-top bag.
  • Carefully transfer the coated cereal to the bag with the cake mix. Seal the bag securely and gently shake until the cereal is evenly coated.
  • Spread the coated cereal onto a large baking sheet or parchment-lined surface.
  • Immediately sprinkle 4 ounces multi-colored sprinkles evenly over the cereal.
  • Allow the mixture to cool completely and let the almond bark set.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature and serve.
