Marshmallows in cereal on a pan.

Step 6. Spread the cereal out. Pour the coated Chex mix onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper or wax paper and allow it to cool. Once cool, toss in the mini marshmallows.

Expert Tips

  • When coating the cereal with the hot chocolate mix, make sure to leave air in the ziplock bag. This will allow the cereal to move around more easily and get fully coated.
  • Heat the chocolate in intervals when melting so it does not burn. Make sure to stir it in between each interval.
  • Allow the muddy buddies mixture to cool completely and set before storing. This will help to prevent them from clumping and becoming a mess.

Variations

  • Add-ins. If you are making these for Christmas, toss in red and green M&M’s. Halloween you can add orange and black M&M’s.
Sprinkles would also be fun. Crushed peppermints would also be a great combination.
  • Powdered sugar. Feel free to use a combination of powdered sugar and hot chocolate mix to coat the cereal. The chocolate flavor will not be as intense but powdered sugar and hot cocoa mix is great together.
  • Cereal. You can change the cereal and use Rice Chex, Corn Chex or Crispix cereal. Feel free to use chocolate chex for even more chocolate flavor. Another idea is to use cinnamon chex cereal for a Mexican Hot Chocolate flavor.
  • Peanut Butter. Creamy peanut butter is a delicious add in.
