Ingredients

Ingredients for St. Patrick's Day Cupcakes - cake mix, gel food coloring, frosting, Oreo cookies, Wilton gold mist, lucky charms.
  • White Cake Mix – Use your favorite brand; prepare according to the box instructions using vegetable oil and large eggs for a tender, moist cupcake.
  • Green Gel Food Coloring – Gel colors give the most vibrant green without thinning the batter. Add a few drops at a time until the desired shade is reached.
  • White Frosting – Use store-bought or homemade frosting. Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe or buttercream frosting works perfectly for a smooth, creamy finish.
  • Oreo Cookies – Regular Oreo cookies (not double stuffed) add crunch and flavor as a topping or filling.
  • Wilton Gold Color Mist – Adds a metallic shimmer to your cupcakes. Available at most craft stores; lightly spray for a festive look.
  • Lucky Charms Cereal – Use as a colorful, whimsical topping to make the cupcakes fun and festive for St. Patrick’s Day.

The complete recipe and ingredients are at the bottom.

Variations

  • Chocolate Cake Base – Swap the white cake mix for chocolate cake mix for a richer cupcake flavor.
  • Rainbow Frosting – Use multiple colors of frosting or swirl colors together for a festive rainbow effect.
  • Gluten-Free Option – Use a gluten-free cake mix and ensure toppings like Lucky Charms are gluten-free.
  • Shamrock Decorations – Use green sprinkles, fondant, or edible shamrock toppers instead of cereal.
  • Mini Cupcakes – Make bite-sized cupcakes for easier serving and fun party treats.
  • Marbled Batter – Swirl green food coloring into the batter for a marbled St. Patrick’s Day effect.
  • Candy Toppings – Swap Lucky Charms for gold chocolate coins, green M&Ms, or rainbow candy pieces.

Pro Tips

  • Cool Completely Before Frosting – Make sure cupcakes are fully cooled before adding frosting to prevent it from melting or sliding off.
  • Allow Oreos to Dry – If spraying or decorating Oreo cookies, let each side dry completely before flipping to avoid smudging.
  • Add Toppings Just Before Serving – Keep cupcakes looking fresh by adding cereal, sprinkles, or candy right before serving.
  • Use Festive Cupcake Liners – Green or St. Patrick’s Day-themed liners make your cupcakes extra festive and fun.
  • Even Frosting – Use a piping bag or spatula for smooth, even frosting. A star tip adds a decorative touch.
  • Decorate with Care – Place cereal, cookies, or gold mist carefully to avoid crushing or uneven distribution.
  • Adjust Food Coloring Gradually – Add gel food coloring a drop at a time until you reach the perfect shade of green.
  • Store Frosting Separately – If preparing in advance, keep frosting in an airtight container and frost cupcakes the same day for best texture.
  • Try a Double Layer – For extra indulgence, add a thin layer of crushed Oreo or cereal in the middle of the cupcake.
  • Personalize the Cupcakes – Add edible glitter, gold coins, or fondant shamrocks for extra festive flair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store cupcakes?

Cover the cupcakes tightly or place inside a cupcake holder. They can be stored at room temperature.

If you make cupcakes a lot and especially if you transport them, a cupcake holder is super handy. You often can find one that converts to a cake and pie holder which makes it even better.

How Long will the cupcakes last?

The cupcakes will last up to 5 to 6 days if covered properly.
Our family eats these pretty fast though. They rarely last that long around here.
