The complete ingredient list can be found at the bottom of the post.
Variations
- Frosting. Feel free to substitute traditional frosting instead of royal icing, You can spread Strawberry Buttercream Frosting Recipe on the cookies or pipe it. Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting is another yummy option.
- Extract. You can use a teaspoon almond extract or a teaspoon vanilla extract in the cookie dough.
- Sprinkles. Top the cookies with festive sprinkles if desired.
Step By Step Instructions
- Step 1. First, preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Step 2. While the oven is warming up, add the softened butter and sugar to a large bowl. Cream this together on medium high speed until it is smooth and not grainy at all.
Step 3. Then, add a large egg one at a time. After you add the egg, mix everything together in a medium bowl or bowl of a stand mixer.
Step 4. Next, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together.
Step 5. Once sifted, add the dry mixture to the wet mixture. Combine until well blended using a paddle attachment.
Step 6. Now form the sugar cookie dough into a ball. Wrap it in plastic wrap so that the entire dough ball is covered. Refrigerate for about 6 hours or overnight. You can check to see if the dough is firm after you chill it.
Step 7. Dust your work surface with flour and also lightly flour the rolling pin. Use a heart cookie cutter and start to cut out your cookies.
Step 8. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone mat. Place the cookies on it.
Step 9. Finally, bake at 325 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. The cookies should be lightly browned around the edges. Remove the cookies from the cookie sheet and place on a cooling rack. Let the cookies cool completely before icing.
Step 10. While the cookies cool, make the frosting. Use medium speed for 4 minutes using a hand mixer. If the icing is not stiff enough, add ¼ cup powdered sugar until the icing is to a 15 second consistency.
Step 11. Next, separate the icing into 5 small bowls. Stir the food gel coloring of your choice into each bowl. I used pastel colors for the cookies: pink, yellow, purple and green.
How to Decorate
Step 1. Put the pastel icing in piping bags and place the icing on the cookies. Lining the cookies first with icing and then flooding with icing is easiest. The icing needs to cool completely before writing on it. This normally takes 2 to 3 hours.
Step 2. Finally, put the red icing in a decorated bag fitted with tip #1. You can write your favorite Valentine’s Day sayings in the center of each cookie or outline it. Some ideas include Love, BFF, Cutie, XOXO, Call Me, Hug, Kiss, etc.
- Step 3. Once you have finished writing, let the writing icing cool completely. Another 2 to 3 hours should do the trick. Make sure that you do not cover the cookies while the icing is cooling.
Pro Tips
- Allow to cool and set before writing. Make sure the icing has completely set before writing on top of it.
- Chill the dough. The dough needs to be refrigerated for at least 6 hours or overnight. I prefer to make it the day before.
- Room temperature ingredients. Using all room temperature ingredients allows the dough to be easier to combine.
- Don’t overbake the cookies. They should be just slightly brown around the edges.
- Sift the dry ingredients. Make sure to sift the flour, baking powder and salt together before combining with the wet ingredients.
