It is really fun to make and so tasty to eat. Let the kids help and see just how simple it is. Chocolate Bark is the perfect dessert for many occasions. It is easy to make and everyone always loves it.

We enjoy this holiday treat year-round and even made Easter Chocolate Bark to enjoy. Another recipe we love to make is Peppermint Bark. Chocolate bark makes a great gift.

Why We Love This

This is a great recipe to make when you are craving chocolate but don’t have a lot of time or ingredients. It is so simple with only 2 ingredients needed. The process consists of melting chocolate and placing it on a baking sheet.

Then we like to get the kids involved and swirl the white chocolate in. They love making fun designs.

Ingredients

a bowl of chocolate chips and white chocolate chips

  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips. This helps the dessert not be overly sweet.
  • White chocolate chips. I like to use Ghirardelli white chocolate.

Find the complete list of ingredients at the bottom of the page.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Switch the Chocolate – Try using white chocolate as the layer and milk chocolate to drizzle the top with.
  • Top with Candy – Use your favorite candy on top. Anything will work that you love! Just crush it and sprinkle on top.
  • Top with Nuts – Add nuts to the top. I like to use pecans, walnuts and almonds.
  • Use all White Chocolate – You can use all white chocolate to make white chocolate bark recipe instead of combining the 2 types of chocolate.
  • Dark Chocolate – Dark Chocolate bark recipe is also tasty if you prefer to use dark chocolate.
  • Add Sprinkles – Add sprinkles to make this festive for different occasions.
  • Sea Salt – Try a little bit of flaky sea salt on top for a sweet and salty treat.
  • Pretzels. Use pretzel pieces for a sweet and salty treat.

How to Make Chocolate Bark

  • Step 1 Line Baking Sheet – First, line a large baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.
Melted chocolate in a bowl.

Step 2 Melt Chocolate Chips – Next, melt the chocolate chips by placing them in a microwave safe dish. Heat in the microwave using 20 second intervals, stirring between each interval until melted. See How to Melt Chocolate Chips. Follow the same process with the white chocolate chips.

Chocolate spread on baking sheet.

Step 3 Pour chocolate into pan – Pour the chocolate onto the baking sheet into a thin layer. Use a spatula to spread the chocolate out as evenly as possible.

White chocolate drizzled on milk chocolate.

Step 4 Drizzle with white chocolate – Then drizzle the white chocolate on top of the chocolate layer.

White chocolate and milk chocolate swirled together.

Step 5 Swirl the chocolate – Use a fork or toothpick to swirl the white chocolate into the chocolate on the baking sheet. Then place the bark in the fridge for 30-60 minutes to hardened. Once set, break into pieces.

Storage

Keep the chocolate bark in an airtight container in the fridge. When ready to serve, take it out of the fridge so it can come to room temperature for a few minutes if desired.

How to Freeze?

If you want to freeze chocolate bark, allow it to harden after making. Then wrap chocolate bark in plastic wrap and place in an airtight freezer container. When you are ready to serve, thaw in the refrigerator

Topping Ideas

  • Dried Fruit – Add your favorite dried fruits to the top after swirling the chocolate. Dried cranberries or dried cherries would be a delicious option.
  • CandyTop the bark with crushed candy canes for a festive look.
  • Marshmallows – Add mini marshmallows to the top of the chocolate bark for texture and flavor.

Pro Tips

  • Use Premium Chocolate – Since chocolate is the main ingredient, use a premium chocolate in this. It will taste much better!
  • Room Temperature – Allow the bark to come to room temperature before breaking so that the layers do not separate.
  • Use Wooden Spoon to break – If the bark is difficult to break with your hands you can use a wooden spoon to gently help.
  • Parchment Paper – Use the parchment paper to help break this apart so that you don’t get fingerprints on the chocolate.
  • Double Boiler – You can melt the chocolate in a double boiler if you prefer. The microwave method works great too.
