Find the complete list of ingredients at the bottom of the page.

Variations

  • Almond Bark. This can be substituted for candy coating if you prefer.
  • White Chocolate Chips. You can also substitute white chocolate chips for the coating.
  • Peanut Butter. Peanut butter fans might like to substitute peanut butter chips in this recipe.
  • Dark Chocolate or Milk Chocolate. Fans of chocolate can substitute chocolate for a rich coating everyone will love.
  • Flavor of Cake. White Cake mix is the most traditional in this recipe but you can use other flavors. Yellow cake mix or any flavor you like would work. Other ideas include: chocolate, lemon, strawberry and more.
  • Sprinkles. Rainbow sprinkles are so fun and pretty. However, you can substitute these for other types. I think chocolate sprinkles would be fun if using chocolate coating.

Step By Step Instructions

Melted candy coating in a mixing bowl.

Step 1 – Melt the candy coating in microwave safe bowl. Place the vanilla candy coating in a large bowl.  Heat in 30 second intervals, stirring after each interval until it’s fully melted. Stir in the Chex Mix and carefully mix until the cereal is coated in the vanilla candy coating.

Ziplock bag with cake mix, sprinkles and powdered sugar.

Step 2 – Get out a large bag. Then add the cake mix, powdered sugar and rainbow sprinkles to a large ziplock bag.  Seal the bag and shake to thoroughly combine these ingredients.

Cereal added to mixture.

Step 3 – Pour the cereal into the bag. Then add the candy coated cereal to the ziplock bag.  Seal and shake to coat the cereal with the sugar, cake mix and sprinkle mixture.

Coated cereal spread on baking sheet.

Step 4 – Spread on a baking sheet. Then pour the puppy chow onto a lined baking sheet to cool.  Then it’s ready to serve and enjoy!

Storage

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Make sure it is completely cool before placing inside the container.

If you store this too soon, it will be messy as it needs time to set. The puppy chow will last up to a week if stored properly.

Expert Tips

  • Melt the candy in intervals. Be careful when melting the vanilla candy coating as it will burn easily.  Heat in small intervals. Continue to stir and allow the heat from the rest of the candy to melt the remaining candy.
  • Good Quality. Try to use the best quality ingredients that you can. This recipe does not have many ingredients so it will really make a difference. This is especially true in the coating.
  • Double the recipe. This is easy to double for parties. Just make sure that you have a bowl or bag large enough for the ingredients.
  • Coat the cereal right away. Don’t let the melted candy coating cool or harden before coating in the cake mix. If you wait too long, it will not stick to the cereal.

Why is it Called Puppy Chow?

The name originates because of its appearance. However, it is not intended for dogs to eat. It is a fun and delicious treat intended for human consumption.

You will often find this at parties, holidays and other celebrations. Depending on what region you are from, this might be called Muddy Buddies.

Whatever you call it, this recipe is amazing. See more Powdered Sugar Desserts.

We love to make this for a quick snack or for a special celebration. It is so fun and really delicious.
