How to Make Chocolate Brownie Cake
- Step 1. Preheat the oven and prepare the pan. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease and flour a bundt pan. I used a 12 cup bundt pan. This is better than only using cooking spray.
- Step 2. Combine the brownie mix and box of chocolate cake mix. In a large bowl, stir together the cake mix, brownie mix, eggs, water and vegetable oil until combined with an electric mixer or stand mixer. Then fold in the chocolate chips with a rubber spatula.
- Step 3. Pour the batter into the bundt cake pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Then carefully turn the bundt pan over onto the rack to cool completely.

Step 4. Place the heavy whipping cream in a microwave safe bowl. Heat for 2-3 minutes until the cream is hot but not boiling. Add the chocolate chips into the heavy whipping cream. Cover with a plate and allow the mixture to sit for 2-3 minutes.

Step 5. Then whisk the mixture until smooth and combined.

Step 6. Pour the ganache topping over the cake.

Step 7. Then the cake is ready to slice, serve and enjoy!
How to Serve
- Vanilla Ice Cream. Top with a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream. It pairs perfectly with the chocolate frosting.
- Whipped Cream. Dollop whipped cream on top of each slice when serving. This homemade whipped cream is so easy and very rich.
Storage
Refrigerator
Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days. See How Long Does Cake Last in the Fridge.
Freezer
You can freeze this cake once it has completely cooled. Wrap in plastic wrap and place the cake inside a freezer container. Freeze up to one month.
Allow to thaw at room temperature when ready to serve. The ganache may not look as pretty once frozen but it will taste great.

Pro Tips
- Ganache Topping. Do not let the heavy whipping cream boil or get too warm when making the ganache.
- Make clean up easier. Place the cake on a wire rack with a lined baking sheet underneath when pouring the glaze. The lined pan will catch the drips and help make clean up easier.
- Easily remove the cake. Make it easier to remove the cake from the pan by placing a cooling rack on top of the pan. Then flip it over to remove the cake from the pan.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you do not have a bundt pan, you can use a regular cake pan. However, the cooking time will vary based on what type of pan you use.
Chocolate frosting is a tasty substitute for the ganache if you want to substitute it.
Cake mix contains more leavening agent than brownie mix. The leavening agent in cake mix makes it rise and the texture is fluffy. Whereas a brownie mix is denser and has a different texture.
