What is Chunky Monkey Ice Cream?
It is the nuttiest chocolatey-chunkiest concoction-gone-bananas. Each bite is jam packed with so much flavor. From the chocolate chunks and walnuts to the bananas, Chunky Monkey Ice Cream taste amazing.
Our family loves this more than Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey Ice Cream. It is really easy to make without an ice cream maker or egg yolks. The creaminess comes from sweetened condensed milk instead of a custard egg base.
Ingredients

- Heavy Whipping Cream. Make sure this is chilled for best results.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk. This gives the ice cream base its rich texture and sweetness. Don’t substitute it.
- Vanilla Extract. Pure vanilla extract is best.
- Ripe Bananas. Don’t use green bananas or overly ripe ones.
Find the complete ingredients and full recipe at the bottom in the recipe card.
Variations
- Nuts – You can substitute other types of nuts for walnuts. Feel free to use peanuts. I think chocolate-covered peanuts would also be fabulous.
- Peanut Butter – Peanut butter fans might want to try this recipe with peanut butter. Swirl in a ½ cup into the ice cream base. You can utilize a knife to swirl the peanut butter back and forth.
- Chocolate – While dark chocolate chunks mimic Ben and Jerry’s the most, you can use other types of chocolate. Try using chocolate chips instead for an amazing treat and tasty mix-ins.
How to Make Chunky Monkey Ice Cream

Step 1. Beat the heavy cream using a stand mixer or handheld mixer. Add the vanilla. The cream should form soft peaks.

Step 2. Next, place the bananas in a blender or food processor. Blend until pureed. The consistency should be smooth.

Step 3. Get out a separate bowl. Add the sweetened condensed milk and the pureed banana mixture. Combine both of these together.

Step 4. Gently fold in the whipped cream into the sweetened condensed milk mixture. Next, gently fold in the walnuts and chocolate chunks.

Step 5. Pour the mixture into pan. Evenly spread the mixture into a loaf pan and freeze for at least 4 hours. The mixture needs to be firm.

Step 6. Scoop and serve.

How Long Will Homemade Ice Cream Last?
This homemade ice cream will keep covered in the freezer for up to 1 month. However, we eat ours much faster.
You might also want to place a layer of parchment paper directly on top of the ice cream. This will help ice crystals from forming.
We make homemade ice cream a lot, so we ordered one of these freezer containers. It is so handy for storing ice cream and the lid is extremely convenient. I definitely recommend an airtight container if you plan to make ice cream frequently.
Pro Tips
- Chill the beaters and mixing bowl. I like to put these in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before whipping the cream. This helps it to whip more quickly and to form the soft peaks.
- Don’t substitute the sweetened condensed milk. This ingredient is crucial to the texture of the ice cream and provides the sweetness. It gives it such a rich and creamy texture.
- Freeze overnight. While 4 hours is the minimum time required, I prefer to freeze this ice cream overnight. It ensures that it is properly frozen and firm. You will definitely be able to scoop the ice cream.
