Homemade Butterfinger recipe is so easy to make. I have been making homemade candy bars for years and it’s so much fun.

The kids love when I make their favorite candy bars. If you have leftover candy corn from Halloween, this is a great way to use them. You don’t even need a candy thermometer. This recipe is perfect to pair with Butterfinger Cake, Butterfinger Cookies ,Homemade Butterfinger Ice Cream and Butterfinger Balls.

I also make Homemade Twix Bars Recipe and it’s always a hit. If you also love Milky Way candy bars, make Milky Way Cookies.

What are Butterfingers?

This is a type of candy bar with a crunchy peanut butter filling. It is coated in chocolate and really decadent.

The filling is made by combining peanut butter with candy for the perfect crunchy texture. It really does taste like a Butterfinger candy bar with lots of crunch. The recipe is so easy, and you don’t even have to heat up the oven.

Find the complete recipe list and nutrition information at the bottom of the page.

Variations

  • White chocolate. Dip these bars in melted white chocolate wafers instead of milk chocolate. Both options are delicious.
  • Crunchy Peanut Butter. We used creamy peanut butter. However, you can use crunchy peanut butter but the results will not be be as smooth. It will have a crunchier taste.
  • Butterfinger bites. You can make these any size you want. Feel free to cut them into bite size pieces.
  • Sea Salt. Top the bars with sea salt if desired.
  • Decorate. You can add sprinkles or anything you like to the bars. It isn’t necessary but would be fun for holidays or special occasions.

I like the idea of doing red and green for Christmas or pastels for Easter. You can easily match the birthday party décor by adding a few sprinkles.

How to make homemade butterfingers

  • Step 1. First, line an 8X8 baking dish with foil or parchment paper. This will help make clean up easy and also help to lift the mixture out of the pan. If you have trouble getting the parchment paper to stay in the pan, use binder clips to hold it down.
Bowl with candy corn and peanut butter melted and combined.

Step 2. Next, put the candy corn in a microwave safe bowl.  Then heat this in 30 second intervals. Make sure to stir with a wooden spoon. You can also use a pot or small saucepan on the stove. Once the candy corn is melted, add the peanut butter immediately.

Mixture spread into baking dish.

Step 3. Then pour the melted candy corn mixture evenly into the 8X8 pan. You may need to use a spatula to smooth it out.

Mixture cut into bars.

Step 4. After the mixture has hardened, use a knife to slice the mixture into bars.

Bars coated in chocolate and placed on baking sheet.

Step 5. Melt the chocolate. Then dip the bars in the melted chocolate. Remove any excess chocolate from the bars with 2 forks. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Storage

The butterfingers can be stored at room temperature for a chewy candy bar. If you prefer a crispy candy bar, store the bars in the fridge.

How long will they last?

Stored at room temperature, they will last 5 to 6 days. Just make sure to keep them inside an airtight container.

They will last up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

We absolutely love these so ours have never lasted too long. Everyone eats them pretty fast.

Recipe Tips

  • Candy Corn. Use traditional candy corn. The stores sell all sorts of flavors now. However, the classic version is best to make butterfingers.

You can usually get the bags on clearance in the Fall so stock up.
  • Chocolate. Since there are so few ingredients, it really is best to use good quality chocolate. The results will taste so much richer. You can also substitute chocolate chips for wafers.
  • Cutting. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to easily cut the mixture into the bars. Either of these will work. It just needs to be sharp.
