Why We Love This
Little Debbie Cake Balls are super easy to make without heating up the oven. The ingredient list is so simple, and the recipe takes very little time. You will love this for parties, movie night or gifts.
Ingredients
- Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes. Grab the Little Debbie Snack Cakes early in the season because they often sell out.
- Cream Cheese. Softened at room temperature so it’s easy to combine.
- White Candy Melts. Candy melts are easy to melt and the texture is smooth.
- Pre-made Red Cookie Icing. This will give the cake balls the same appearance as the snack cakes. You can also use red candy melts.
- Red and Green Sanding Sugar. Make sure to use sanding sugar so it looks like the traditional Little Debbie cakes.

Step By Step Instructions
- Step 1. Get the baking sheet ready. Place wax paper or parchment paper on the sheet pan.
Step 2. Next, crumble the Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes into pieces and place in a large bowl. Add the cream cheese and combine with an electric mixer. I like to use a hand mixer or stand mixer. Scrape down the side of the bowl.
Step 3. Roll into 1-inch balls. I like to use a small cookie scoop, so they are the same size. Then place on the baking sheet. Freeze for 1 hour.
Step 4. Use a microwave safe bowl and put the white candy melts in it. Microwave for 1 minute. Then stir and continue to heat in 30 second intervals until melted.
Step 5. Then dip each ball into the white candy melts. Tap on the edge of the ball to remove any excess candy. Place back on the baking sheet.
Step 6. Add the red and green sugar sprinkles. Allow to cool at room temperature for 3-4 hours or in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
Step 7. Finally, drizzle the red cookie icing on top of the cake balls to resemble the red frosting on the Christmas tree cakes.
Storage
Store any leftover cakes at room temperature in an airtight container or bag for up to 5 days. If you live in a humid area, store in the refrigerator to keep the cake balls from melting.
Can You Freeze?
Yes, this recipe is easy to freeze. Place inside a freezer container with the layers separated with wax paper. Freeze up to 2 months if coated. You can freeze up to 3 months if they have not been dipped.
Expert Tips
- Freeze the cake balls. Don’t skip this step. The cake balls will look smoother and turn out much better if you freeze before dipping.
- Allow to set. The candy melts need to set before adding the red cookie icing.
- Smooth Ball. When making the balls, try to get them as smooth as possible. I find this easiest using a cookie scoop.
- Turn into cake pops. Insert a stick before dipping in candy melts to make cake pops.
- Candy Melts work best. They melt smooth and make dipping easy. You can also use almond bark. If you prefer white chocolate or milk chocolate, you will need to add coconut oil to thin the mixture for dipping.
- Remove excess chocolate. Before placing the cake balls on the baking sheet, remove any extra candy melts or chocolate. Just tap the fork on the side of the bowl.
