Why This Recipe Works

Oreo cookies always make a great treat, and they are even better with chocolate and sprinkles. They also look so pretty with all the green and festive topping.

This treat is the perfect recipe for a St. Patrick’s day party, after school snacks or to surprise the kids in their lunchbox. The ideas are endless.

The recipe is inexpensive to make and so delicious. Everyone will be thrilled you made this recipe.

Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe: candy melts, oreo cookies, sprinkles.
  • Oreos. Regular Oreo cookies instead of double stuffed work best.
  • White Candy Melts and Green Candy Melts. Find these on the baking aisle. I like Wilton candy melts.
  • Sprinkles. Choose any type of festive sprinkles. White sprinkles look pretty with green candy coating. I like to use nonpareils.

Variations

  • Coating. You can use white chocolate chips or white melting chocolate with green food coloring instead of candy melts. Just melt white chocolate in intervals as you would the candy melts. Try melting chocolate wafers if you prefer milk chocolate flavor in candy-making. Another option is almond bark. It’s easy to change the color of chocolate for other holidays.
  • More colors. Drizzle different colors of candy melts on top to create a festive St Patrick’s day treat. This would be really pretty if you are making these for a St Patrick day party. You can switch colors to make these for a different holiday including Christmas, Easter and more.
  • Flavors. Try Mint Oreos or Golden Oreos instead of regular Oreo cookies.
  • Molds. You can purchase silicone molds to make the cookies, but it isn’t necessary.
  • Topping. Drizzle melted white chocolate on top of the green coated Oreo cookies.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Oreos

  • Step 1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper.
  • Step 2. Then put the white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and the green candy melts in another separate bowl. Heat the candy melts in intervals starting with 30 second increments. Continue to heat until melted. Only melt in intervals so it does not burn.

Step 3. Dip an Oreo in the melted candy. You may need to use a spoon to cover the entire cookie. Then use a fork to remove the Oreo carefully. Gently tap the fork against the side of the bowl to allow excess chocolate drip. It looks so pretty with some cookies in green chocolate and some in white.

Step 4. Finally, place the dipped Oreos on the baking sheet and add the sprinkles. Just make sure that you top the Oreos with the sprinkles before the candy dries. Allow the cookies to sit at room temperature for about 1 hour.

Storage

Put the oreo cookies inside an air tight container with lid. You can also use a gallon size ziplock bag. Just make sure it is sealed well.

The cookies should be completely set and dry before storing.

If you used a lot of sprinkles, you might want to place wax paper or parchment paper in between the layers of cookies.

They will last 2 to 3 weeks if stored properly. You can easily make these in advance to save time when you need them.

Pro Tips

  • Melt the candy in increments. You don’t want to risk burning the candy melts. Microwave in 30 second intervals making sure to stir in between each one.
  • Top with sprinkles right away. It’s important to add the sprinkles right away before the candy coating dries. You may need to work in batches, so the cookies don’t dry.
  • Allow to set for at least an hour. The cookies need to completely set before storing or serving.
  • Line the baking sheet. Cleanup is easier if you line the pan with parchment paper.
  • Microwave safe bowls. Make sure to use bowls that are microwave safe.
