  • Vanilla Wafers. If vanilla wafers are not available in your area, any butter cookies will work great in this recipe.  Some ideas include: shortbread cookies, lemon cookies and graham crackers.
  • Pudding flavors to try. Vanilla pudding or banana cream pudding can be substituted in this recipe.
  • Homemade pudding. We used instant pudding because it is quick and easy. However, you can use homemade pudding in this recipe if you prefer.
  • Cream cheese add in. Blend a block of cream cheese into the pudding mixture before folding in the other ingredients. This will give the recipe an even richer flavor.
  • Marshmallow Fluff. Add fluff in the pudding mixture. It adds a new level of sweetness and tastes like Banana Cream Pudding Pie.
  • Chocolate Drizzle. You can drizzle chocolate sauce on top of each serving. The combination of chocolate and the banana mixture is really yummy. You can also use mini chocolate chips.
  • Maraschino Cherries. Top with cherries before serving.

Serving Suggestions

This recipe needs to be served immediately as the banana will turn brown as the mixture sits.  Scoop into small dessert bowls and serve.

Another idea is to go ahead and make individual portions in mason jars, plastic cups or other small serving items. This is an easy idea for parties or when you need the ease of grab and go dessert portions.

Storage

Cover leftovers with plastic wrap or use an airtight container. Refrigerate until ready to serve.  Can you freeze Banana Pudding?

Can You Make in Advance?

We do not recommend making this recipe in advance. It is best served fresh and within an hour of making.

Otherwise, the bananas will turn brown and become mushy.

Recipe Tips

  • Serve fresh. This dessert is best served fresh and should not be made in advance. The bananas will turn brown and everything will get mushy.
  • Store bought whipped topping. This is not the recipe to use homemade whipped cream. Just pick up a tub at the grocery store as it will hold up best in the fluff recipe.
  • Any type of milk works great. You can use whole milk, 2% or anything you prefer.
  • Ripe bananas. The bananas should be ripe but not overly soft. They will get mushy in the pudding mixture once combined.
