Why This Recipe Works

It is the best treat to beat the heat or to enjoy year-round. Since you do not need any special equipment or ice bath, this can be made effortlessly. No egg yolks or cooking involved for this recipe.

This sweet vanilla ice cream with bittersweet chocolate and cherries tastes amazing.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Cherry chocolate chip ice cream - heavy whipped cream, red cherries, sweetened condensed milk, mini chocolate chips.
  • Heavy whipping cream. Make sure this is chilled before using.
  • Dark red cherries. Drain before using.
  • Sweetened condensed milk. This gives the ice cream the perfect amount of sweetness.
  • Mini chocolate chips. The miniature size is easy to fold into the ice cream and the best size.

Find the entire list of ingredients in the recipe card at the bottom.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Flavoring. The vanilla extract helps complement the fruity sweetness of the cherries. If you want to amplify the cherry flavor, you can substitute the vanilla extract for 1 teaspoon of almond extract.
  • Fresh Cherries. You can substitute fresh ripe sweet cherries with lemon juice in this recipe. Just make sure to pit the cherries with a cherry pitter and cut them in half.

How to Make Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Mixing bowl of heavy cream.

Step 1. Use an electric hand mixer to whip the cream in a large mixing bowl. Start on a low speed and increase the speed once the cream thickens and form soft peaks.

Cherries added to mixture.

Step 2. Once the heavy cream forms soft peaks, add the prepared cherries, condensed milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until combined.

Step 3. Add the mini chocolate chips to the vanilla bean custard.

Ice cream mixture combined.

Step 4. Gently fold them into the ice cream mixture. Do not use the mixer for this step.

Mixture spread into loaf pan.

Step 5. Pour the ice cream mixture into a large plastic freezer container or a 9×5 inch loaf pan.

Mixture frozen and ready to serve.

Step 6. Allow the cherry ice cream to sit in the fridge covered with plastic wrap for 24 hours. Grab a spoon and enjoy. If you like it more of soft serve style, allow to sit before scooping.

Storage

You can store this ice cream in the fridge covered with plastic wrap for up to one month. I also recommend placing a layer of parchment paper directly on top of the ice cream to prevent ice crystals and freezer burn.

How long will homemade ice cream last?

As long as you cover it properly in the freezer, it will last up to a month.

Pro Tips

  • Combining the Cherries. I like to add the cherries with the condensed milk instead of with the chocolate chips. This helps them to be broken up and to release the cherry juice throughout the ice cream mixture.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips. I like to use mini chocolate chips because they will not freeze as hard as normal sized chocolate chips. This gives you just as much chocolate flavor without worrying about biting into a frozen chocolate chip.
  • Adding the cherries and chocolate. You want to make sure the cream has reached soft peaks before adding anything. This will ensure the cherries and chocolate chips do not sink to the bottom of the container before the ice cream is fully set.
  • Good quality chocolate. Use the best quality chocolate you can. The ice cream will taste much better.
