What is The Difference Between a Dump Cake And a Cobbler?
While they are similar with a fruit filling, the topping is different in these two types of desserts. A dump cake uses a dry cake mix such as yellow cake mix, vanilla cake mix or white cake mix.
Cobbler topping consists of a biscuit like topping that has a different texture. Cobbler recipes require more preparation and steps to make than a dump cake.
The topping for cobbler needs to be combined and usually requires several ingredients. Whereas dump cake topping is just dry cake mix and melted butter.

- Whipped Cream. Top each bowl with a generous dollop of Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe.
- Ice Cream. Enjoy this dessert with a scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor. We love a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream with it, but you can use anything you love.
- Caramel Sauce. Drizzle caramel sauce on each bowl to make it even more decadent and delicious.
It is best served warm but still tasty cold. This is based on personal preference but our favorite is warm cobbler and cold ice cream. The combination is divine!
Storage
Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container. It will last up to 5 days in the fridge. Cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
Reheat in the microwave until it is warm and heated through.

Expert Tips
- Fully baked topping. The cobbler topping should be fully baked and not doughy in any spots. If you are unsure, lift a few places slightly with a fork to see that it looks completely cooked since ovens do vary.
- Cake Mix. We used a white cake mix but other variations would be just as tasty. Try using yellow cake mix or vanilla cake mix.
- Don’t combine. The topping should be sprinkled on top and not combined with the fruit filling.
- Add nuts. You can add chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping before baking for added crunch.

What Other Fruits Go Well in Cobbler?
Another great thing about this recipe is how easy it is to change the type of fruit filling. While the recipe calls for cherry pie filling, you can truly use anything you prefer.
Other tasty ideas include apple, strawberry, blueberry, peach and more. It is very simple to use anything you have on hand or prefer.
