  • Creamy layers. The delicious pudding and whipped cream create luscious layers packed with banana flavor.
  • It’s so easy. Once you see how easy this is, you will make it all the time! No worries if you can’t travel to NYC!

Ingredients

Ingredients for Magnolia's Banana Pudding- vanilla wafers, banana, pudding, water, sweetened condensed milk,.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk. This type of milk makes the pudding so rich and decadent. It provides the perfect amount of sweetness.
  • Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix. Make sure that you use instant pudding and not the type you have to cook. I like to use jell-o brand.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream. This is to make the whipped cream. Make sure it is cold.
  • Sliced Barely Ripe Bananas. Don’t use overly ripe or brown bananas. They need to be barely ripe.
  • Nilla Wafers. Try Vanilla Wafer Cookies Recipe.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Cool Whip. Substitute Cool Whip for the homemade whipped cream in a pinch.
  • French Vanilla. Swap the regular vanilla pudding for French Vanilla.

Step By Step Instructions

Glass bowl of pudding.

Step 1. Use a large bowl and beat on medium speed the sweetened condensed milk with the water and pudding mix. Beat until well combined using an electric mixer with whisk attachment.  Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 4 hours or overnight so it can thicken.

Bowl of whipping cream.

Step 2. Get out a separate bowl and whip the heavy cream. I used a stand mixer. Beat until stiff peaks form and then reduce to low speed.

Step 3. Carefully fold in the homemade whipped cream into the pudding until no streaks of pudding remain.

Expert Tips

  • Barely Ripe Bananas. The recipe calls for bananas that are barely ripe. This will prevent them from turning brown so quickly. Fresh bananas are best and not overripe.
  • Keep the dessert airtight. If any air gets into the container, the bananas will turn brown faster.
  • Allow to set. The pudding needs to chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours before serving. This gives the flavors time to combine.
  • Fold the whipped cream carefully. You want to keep the pudding fluffy. Don’t deflate the whipped cream by overmixing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store?

Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours before serving. Can you freeze Banana Pudding?

Can you make this in advance?

This is best made in advance so the vanilla wafers can soften in the layers. However, I recommend serving within 8 hours of making this pudding as the bananas will start to brown slightly.

Also, you can use slightly under-ripe bananas for this pudding to make sure that they do not go bad before serving.

How long does Banana Pudding last?

After a day, the bananas will start to brown. Once you make this assembled dessert, it is best to eat within 4 to 8 hours.

What type of serving dish is best?

Individual serving containers are best if you want to make it similar to Magnolia’s. However, you can also make it in a trifle bowl or any wide glass bowl.

What is Magnolia Bakery?

It is a popular bakery in New York City that started in 1996. Currently, they now have multiple locations.

How to keep bananas from turning brown?

You can brush the banana slices with lemon juice or club soda. Other type of fruit juice that works include pineapple and lime. Don’t dip the fruit but brush the juice so it does not alter the flavor.
