Step By Step Instructions
- Step 1. Preheat the oven and prepare the donut pan with cooking spray.

Step 2. Combine the cake mix in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3. Fill the donut pan with the mixture. I like to use a piping bag to fill the donut pan. You can also place the batter in a large ziplock bag and cut the corner off the bag to pipe the batter into the pan.

Step 4. Then bake the donuts for 10-13 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the donuts comes out clean. Allow the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Step 5. Dip half the cooled doughnuts in the vanilla glaze and dip the other half of the donuts in the chocolate glaze. Then top with the sprinkles.
How to Make Glaze
- Step 1. Get out 2 separate bowls. In 2 separate bowls, whisk together the glaze ingredients and the chocolate glaze ingredients.
- Step 2. Dip the donuts in the glaze. Dip half the cooled doughnuts in the vanilla glaze and dip the other half of the donuts in the chocolate glaze covering about half of the donuts. Then top with the sprinkles at this time.
- Step 3. Allow to cool. Let the donuts cool (so the glaze can set) for approximately 30 minutes before serving. Then enjoy the donuts.

Serving Suggestions
- Coffee. Donuts and coffee pair together perfectly. Try a donut with your favorite cup of coffee or iced coffee.
- Breakfast or Brunch. Serve an assortment of items with the donuts such as bacon, fresh fruit salad, or cinnamon rolls for a tasty meal.
- Ice Cream Sandwich. Take these donuts to the next level and make an ice cream sandwich with them. Slice the donut in half and place ice cream in the middle. It is an indulgent way to enjoy these donuts for special occasions.
Storage
Store the leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
You can also freeze the donuts up to a month inside an airtight freezer container. It is best to freeze them without glaze or topping. When ready to serve, thaw and add the glaze then.
Pro Tips
- Don’t overmix the batter. Combine the ingredients until just mixed. Do not overmix or the donuts will be dense instead of soft and fluffy.
- Adjust the glaze. You can easily adjust the glaze consistency to your liking. It is easy to modify the recipe so that you can have a thinner drizzle or thicker glaze based on what you want.
- Top with sprinkles right away. Add the sprinkles before the glaze sets so they stick.
Substitutions and Variations
- Cake Mix. Try other cake mix flavors to make these donuts. Spice Cake Mix is delicious in the Fall. Other ideas to try include strawberry, lemon, chocolate and more.
- Frosting. Skip the glaze and top the donuts with frosting. We love Oreo Frosting and Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting. Chocolate frosting is also delicious.
- Donut Glaze. Try different flavors of glaze in this recipe. You can add lemon extract or lemon zest for a lovely lemon taste. The ideas are endless.
- Mix-ins. Try adding chocolate chips, dried fruit, chopped candy or nuts to the donut batter.
- Donut Holes. Instead of making donuts, you can make donut holes. Form the batter into small holes and bake as normal.
- Seasonal Variations. Swap out the sprinkles for seasonal variations for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Halloween and more. This Cake Donut Recipe is easy to adapt for holidays all year round.
