Ingredients

  • Chex Cereal. You can use rice or corn Chex.
  • Peanut Butter. I like to use creamy peanut butter. The smooth peanut butter blends much better with the other ingredients.
  • Green Candy Melts. Find this in the baking section.
  • Powdered Sugar. If it is lumpy, sift before using.
  • Red M&Ms. This completes the look on this tasty treat.
  • Gallon Ziplock Bag. It’s easier to combine the cereal pieces and mixture using a bag.

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the complete ingredients list.

Variations

  • Sprinkles. While optional, sprinkles are always a fun idea. Red and green would be pretty or just add a few red heart sprinkles.
  • Nuts. Try adding pecans or walnuts for a change.
  • Seasonal. Use red and green M&M candies and you now have Christmas Puppy Chow. We also make Valentine’s Day Puppy Chow Recipe.
  • Other colors. Change the colors to match baby showers, birthday parties, Game Day, and more. The ideas are endless.
  • Topping. Drizzle with white chocolate or other chocolate chips with peanut butter. The peanut butter and chocolate flavors make the best puppy chow.

How to Make Grinch Puppy Chow

  • First, get out a microwave-safe large mixing bowl. Combine the green candy melts, peanut butter, and vegetable oil together and microwave for 30 seconds.
  • Second, stir and continue to cook in 15-second intervals until the chocolate and peanut butter mixture is melted and smooth. It is really important to do this in these intervals or you risk burning it and the mixture becoming hard.
  • It took about 60 seconds total for mine but microwaves do vary!
  • Next, put the Chex cereal in a large bowl and Pour the melted peanut butter and melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and quickly stir to coat.
  • Finally, pour the powdered sugar into the gallon ziplock bag.  Add the coated cereal into the gallon bag and seal tightly.
  • Shake to coat the cereal. Kids love to help with this part! Get them involved and let them be a part of the process.
  • After the cereal is well coated, pour it onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet and let it cool.

  • The last step is to sprinkle the red M&M’s over the top once the puppy chow is completely cool. Just stir to combine them with the puppy chow.
  • It is important to not rush this last step. If you add the M&M’s too soon while it is not completely cool, the red will melt and not be as pretty.

Pro Tips

  • Use an airtight container for storage. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
  • Good quality candy melts. We used these green candy melts and the recipe turned out so pretty and yummy too. You can certainly use any brand, but we used Wiltons.
  • Prepare the baking sheet. Don’t forget to use parchment paper on the cookie sheet. This will really help with clean up so don’t skip this step!
  • Allow to cool before adding candy. If you add the M&M’s too soon, they will melt. Make sure to let the mixture cool.

Storage

Store in an airtight container for up to a week at room temperature and enjoy. Ours never lasts that long though because we eat it quickly. We really love it.
