What are churro bites?

Churros consist of fried dough with a cinnamon and sugar coating. They are a popular Mexican treat at Carnivals and more. The flavor is similar to donuts but the texture is different.

This recipe is for bite size churros instead of one large one. It is the ideal size for snacking and the best excuse to eat several.

How to make churro bites:

  • Step 1 – Heat the oil. Fill a large pot with 2 inches of vegetable oil and heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees F.
  • Step 2 – Make the churro dough. While the oil is heating, prepare the dough for the churro bites.
  • Step 3 – Get out a small saucepan. Add the water, butter, ¼ tsp of the cinnamon and salt to a saucepan over medium high heat.  Stir to combine and bring to a boil.  Then reduce the heat to low.
  • Step 4 – Gradually add the flour. Continue to stir in the flour until a ball is formed.  Then remove the saucepan from the heat and cool for 5 minutes.
  • Step 5 – Add the eggs. Then add the eggs into the mixture one at a time and stir until they are all combined.

  • Step 6 – Pipe the dough using a piping tip. Attach a large star tip to a piping bag and spoon the dough mixture into the piping bag.  Pipe 1-1 ½ strips of dough over the sauce pan (cut the dough with a knife or kitchen scissors) and place them in the hot oil.

Repeat the process until you have multiple churro bites frying the oil but be careful to not overcrowd the pan so that the churros can still fry.
  • Step 7 – Continue to fry the churros. Fry the churro bites in the oil for 2-3 minutes until they are golden brown.
  • Step 8 – Remove from oil and drain. Then remove the churro bites from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the excess oil.
  • Step 9 – Mix together the coating. Then in a small shallow dish, combine the sugar and the remaining cinnamon.
  • Step 10 – Coat the churros. Roll the churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture while they are still warm.

What to serve with churro bites:

The churros bites are yummy plain but it is fun to use dipping sauce too. We love to serve several different options and everyone can choose their favorite.

Tips for making Churro Bites:

  • Don’t overcrowd the pan. The dough needs sufficient room while cooking and should not be overcrowded. You will need to fry the churros in batches.
  • Coat in topping while warm. Roll the churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture while warm. This will help it to adhere to each churro bite.
  • You can use a ziploc bag for piping. No worries if you do not have a piping bag. Simply, place the dough inside a piping bag and pipe into the oil.
  • Ensure the oil isn’t too hot. If the oil is too hot, the churros will cook too fast on the outside while being undercooked on the inside.
  • Churros are best eaten fresh. For best taste, serve and enjoy these churros bites as soon as you cook them.
