Churros consist of fried dough with a cinnamon and sugar coating. They are a popular Mexican treat at Carnivals and more. The flavor is similar to donuts, but the texture is different.

This recipe is for bite size churros instead of one large one. It is the ideal size for snacking and the best excuse to eat several.

Storage

You can store any leftover churro bites in an airtight container or bag at room temperature for up to 3 days. However, these are best served immediately after cooking.

How to Freeze?

Prepare the churro recipe as normal. Allow to cool completely. Wrap the churros in plastic wrap and place them inside an airtight freezer container.

Freeze up to a month. When ready to enjoy, unwrap and allow to thaw at room temperature. Place on a baking sheet and reheat in the oven.

Bake churros at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

The churros bites are yummy plain, but it is fun to use dipping sauce too. We love to serve several different options, and everyone can choose their favorite.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t overcrowd the pan. The dough needs sufficient room while cooking and should not be overcrowded. You will need to fry the churros in batches.
  • Coat in topping while warm. Roll the churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture while warm. This will help it to adhere to each churro bite.
  • You can use a ziploc bag for piping. No worries if you do not have a piping bag. Simply, place the dough inside a piping bag and pipe into the oil.
  • Ensure the oil isn’t too hot. If the oil is too hot, the churros will cook too fast on the outside while being undercooked on the inside.
  • Churros are best eaten fresh. For best taste, serve and enjoy these churros bites as soon as you cook them.

Instructions

  • Fill a large pot with 2 inches of vegetable oil and heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees F.
  • While the oil is heating, prepare the dough for the churro bites.
  • In a small saucepan, add the water, butter, ¼ tsp of the cinnamon and salt.  Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a boil.  Then reduce the heat to low.
  • Slowly add in the flour until a ball is formed.  Then remove the saucepan from the heat and cool for 5 minutes. Then add the eggs into the mixture one at a time and stir until they are all combined.
  • Attach a large star tip to a piping bag and spoon the dough mixture into the piping bag.  Pipe 1-1 ½ strips of dough over the sauce pan (cut the dough with a knife or kitchen scissors) and place them in the hot oil.  Repeat the process until you have multiple churro bites frying the oil but be careful to not overcrowd the pan so that the churros can still fry.
  • Fry the churro bites in the oil for 2-3 minutes until they are golden brown.
  • Then remove the churro bites from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the excess oil.
  • Then in a small shallow dish, combine the sugar and the remaining cinnamon.
  • Roll the churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture while they are still warm.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!
