Variations

  • Double the Oreos. For an extra rich cookies-and-cream flavor, mix chopped Oreos into the cereal and sprinkle more on top.
  • Use flavored Oreos. Try different Oreo varieties like Golden, Mint, or Birthday Cake for a unique twist.
  • Add white chocolate chips. Stir in white chocolate chips for added sweetness and a creamy texture.
  • Drizzle with chocolate. Melt semi-sweet or white chocolate and drizzle it over the top for an extra-decadent finish.
  • Mix in mini marshmallows. Fold in a handful of mini marshmallows at the end for pockets of soft, chewy goodness.
  • Top with crushed cookies. Press extra Oreo pieces on top before the bars set for added texture and eye-catching presentation.
  • Make them gluten-free. Use gluten-free crispy rice cereal and certified gluten-free Oreos to make this recipe safe for gluten-free diets.

Step by Step Instructions

  • Step 1 – Spray Pan – First, spray a 9X13 baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray.
Crushing Oreos in a ziplock bag

Step 2 – Crush Oreos – Place the Oreos in a large ziplock bag and gently crush them into large chunks with a rolling pin.

Marshmallows in a bowl with melted butter

Step 3 – Melt Butter and Marshmallows – Melt the butter and cups of mini marshmallows in a large microwave safe bowl.  Heat it in 30 second increments and stir between each one until fully meted.  You can also melt in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Mix in Rice Krispie cereal to the melted marshmallows

Step 4 – Mix in Cereal – Once it’s melted, mix in the Rice Krispie cereal until completely coated.

Stir in crushed Oreos into the cereal mixture

Step 5 – Mix in Chopped Oreos – Fold in the crushed Oreos into the melted marshmallow mixture.

  • Step 6 – Spread into Pan – Spread evenly into the prepared pan.  Use a piece of wax to press the Rice Krispies into the bottom of the pan.
  • Step 7 – Spray Wax Paper – I spray the wax paper with a non-stick spray so that it doesn’t stick to the wax paper.
  • Step 8 – Serve and Enjoy – Allow to cool completely before serving.  Slice, serve and enjoy.

Pro Tips

  • Thinner treats option. If you prefer thinner bars, simply make a half batch and spread it in the same size pan. We love thick, gooey treats but go with the texture you enjoy most!
  • Avoid the refrigerator. Don’t refrigerate your treats. Cooling them at room temperature helps them stay soft, gooey, and chewy rather than hard and dry.
  • Use parchment paper. Line your pan with parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup. It also makes lifting the entire batch out for slicing super simple.
  • Use fresh ingredients. Always use fresh marshmallows and cereal. Stale ingredients can result in hard or dry treats and a dull flavor.
  • Add vanilla extract. A splash of vanilla extract enhances the flavor and adds a warm, bakery-style note to the treats.
  • Press gently into the pan. Use a spatula or lightly greased hands to gently press the mixture into the pan. Don’t pack it down too firmly or the treats will become dense instead of soft.
  • Work quickly. Once the marshmallow mixture is combined with the cereal and Oreos, transfer it to the pan right away before it starts to set.

Storage

Room Temperature: Store Oreo Rice Krispie Treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. This keeps them soft and chewy.

Avoid Refrigeration: Do not store them in the fridge, as it can make the treats hard and less gooey. Room temperature is best for maintaining texture.

Layer with Wax Paper: If stacking treats, place a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking.

Freezing (Optional): You can freeze Rice Krispie treats for up to 1 month. Wrap each square individually in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer-safe bag. Thaw at room temperature for 15–20 minutes before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are my Rice Krispie Treats falling apart?

The most common cause is using too many marshmallows. This will cause them to be soft and fall apart.
Resist the urge to add extra marshmallows because the results will not be the same. We recommend following the recipe as listed. This ensure that your adding the right amount of marshmallows and cereal.
Another culprit is too much cereal that causes the mixture to be dry. This will make the recipe crumble and fall apart.

Why do my Rice Crispy Treats get Hard?

When melting the butter and marshmallows, we recommend melting over low heat. Heating this mixture over high heat or too fast causes the mixture to make the treats hard.
