Ingredients
- Apples. This recipe is best with tart and crisp. Do not use overly ripe apples as they need lots of crunch. I suggest Fuji, Gala and Honeycrisp apples.
- Caramel Sauce. This is for serving and our favorite is this Homemade Caramel Sauce Recipe.
Variations
- Fruit. Apple is delicious but you can try this recipe using pears or even fresh pumpkin slices. The technique is easy to duplicate using other fruits and flavors.
- Powdered Sugar. Instead of topping the apple slices in cinnamon sugar, toss in powdered sugar for another yummy ideas.
How to make Apple Fries

Step 1. Heat the oil. Heat 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large pot until it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2. Prepare the apples. Peel, core and slice the apples. They should be approximately the size of French fries.

Step 3. Coat the apples. Toss the apple slices in the cornstarch until the slices are well coated with the cornstarch.

Step 4. Combine the cinnamon and sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Step 5. Cook the apples in batches. Fry the apple slices in the hot oil (in batches) for 2-3 minutes using medium high heat.

Step 6. Make sure to flip the apples halfway through the cook time until the apples are soft and are lightly golden brown.

Step 7. Then remove the apples with a slotted spoon to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the excess oil. Roll the apple fries in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Sprinkle more on top if desired.

Step 8. Serve with dipping sauce and enjoy.

Storage
Deep fried treats are usually best served fresh so we do prefer this right away.
Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
You can also freeze the apples. Allow the apples to cool. Then place inside a freezer bag or container. Freeze up to 3 months.
Thaw in the fridge overnight when ready to enjoy.
If serving leftovers, it is best to reheat them in the oven at 400 degrees on a baking sheet. You can also use the air fryer so they will be crispy. Another option is to fry them in a little bit of oil or cooking spray in a skillet.
The microwave is not the best option. They will still taste great but not have the same crispy texture when first fried.

Pro Tips
- Coat in cinnamon sugar while hot. Go ahead and toss in the cinnamon sugar coating right away so that it sticks.
- Fry in batches. You don’t want the apples touching or overlapping. The slices will likely need to be cooked in batches.
- Slices. Instead of French Fries shape, you can cut these into wedges, squares or circles for frying.
- Apples. The type of apple should be sweet and tart for the best combination. You can use Granny Smith Apples if you prefer tart apples. This balances out perfectly with the cinnamon and sugar topping, so it is not overly week.
- Spices. Try using Apple Pie Spice or pumpkin pie spice for a new flavor twist.
- Oil. We suggest using Vegetable Oil or Canola Oil in this recipe. Both of these are neutral and withstand high heat.
- Cornstarch. Don’t skip coating tossing the apples in cornstarch before frying them. This helps to give them a crispy texture.
Frequently Asked Questions
This recipe is delicious using any type of apples. However, our favorite includes varieties that are a combination of tart and sweet. Granny Smith and Pink Lady apples are perfect options to use.
We do not recommend using Red Delicious apples because they are softer and not as firm. The soft texture of these apples will not hold up to the high temperatures of frying and become mushy.
This simple snack is made of apple slices. Cinnamon and sugar coating cover each slice.
Start by peeling the apples. Then use an apple corer to remove the center. Use a cutting board to slice into pieces that look like French Fries.
You can also cut the apples into wedges if you prefer. The shape does not matter as much as the size.
It is important to cut all of the apples into the same size. This will ensure they cook evenly and for the same amount of time.
No, you do not have to peel the apples. Feel free to do what you like the best. We like to peel the apples before use but you can opt to leave them on if desired.
