How to Make Marshmallow Frosting

Combine butter and powdered sugar in a bowl

Step 1 – First, beat the butter and powdered sugar mixture until fluffy in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer. You want this to be mixed together really well.

Mix in marshmallow fluff and vanilla

Step 2 – Second, add the marshmallow fluff and vanilla. It is best to mix this part by hand.

Step 3 – That is it! You can add the milk if it is too thick to get to the consistency you prefer. If you need to add the milk, start with a tablespoon and add more as needed.

Step 4 – Finally, put the frosting in a piping bag and decorate your cupcakes. You can also use this on a cake if you would rather do that.

Expert Tips

  • Piping bag for cupcakes I like to use a disposable decorator bag and just toss it when finished. One less thing to clean up and the cupcakes look fancy.
  • Stand mixer– I love my stand mixer to beat the powdered sugar and butter with the whisk attachment. It sure makes it easier. Just remember to add the marshmallow fluff and vanilla by hand.
  • Consistency – Add more powdered sugar if your frosting is too runny. Likewise, you can add more milk if it is too thick. Just make sure to add both of these in small increments.
  • Serving – This frosting is best served the day you decorate the cupcakes or cake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Make in Advance?

You can make this frosting up to 2 days in advance since it is a buttercream frosting and doesn’t have egg whites in it. Just make sure to store in the fridge until ready to use. You can even frost your cake or cupcakes and store them in fridge until ready to serve. But we do think it is best made when you are ready to serve your dessert.

How Much will this Frost?

This recipe makes enough for 12 cupcakes or one layer of cake. You can easily double the recipe if you need more.

What’s the difference between marshmallow cream and marshmallow fluff?

They are very similar in both flavor and consistency. However, the main difference is marshmallow cream contains cream of tartar and marshmallow fluff does not.

Can I use melted marshmallows instead of fluff?

Yes, but the melted marshmallows will need to be combined with corn syrup for the desired consistency. The ratio is 1 cup of marshmallows to 1 teaspoon corn syrup.

Melt the marshmallows and then add the corn syrup. You can add another ½ teaspoon corn syrup if the mixture isn’t smooth enough.
