This frosting is a delightful variation of traditional Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe. With lots of cinnamon flavor, it is wonderful on fall desserts such as Cinnamon Roll Cake, Cinnamon Roll Recipe and Easy Cinnamon Roll Cookies Recipe.

It is similar to Cinnamon Buttercream but made with regular cream cheese frosting. It’s delicious on a layer cake or spice cake. I love to bake but don’t have much time. As a busy mom, this recipe makes it simple to make homemade treats.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Just 5 ingredients. You only need a handful of baking staple ingredients to make homemade frosting.
  • Rich and Creamy. The texture is perfect and so amazing.
  • Lots of cinnamon flavor. The ground cinnamon elevates traditional cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients

Ingredients for icing- powdered sugar, cinnamon, butter, cream cheese, vanilla.
  • Cream Cheese. Learn How to Soften Cream Cheese.
  • Butter. I like to use salted butter. The salt in it pairs with the sweetness of the powdered sugar. You can use unsalted butter if you prefer.
  • Powdered Sugar. Remove lumps by sifting before using.
  • Vanilla Extract. Don’t add too much or your frosting will be runny.
  • Cinnamon. Adds the perfect amount of spice to creamy frosting. You can try grating your own cinnamon powder with a cinnamon stick and a grater.

Pro Tips

  • Full Fat Cream Cheese. Make sure to use full fat cream cheese in this recipe. Low fat cream cheese may change the texture. Also, do not use the tubs. You want to use the bricks.
  • Room Temperature Ingredients. The frosting will combine easier if the butter and cream cheese are softened at room temperature. It will also make the texture smoother.
  • Sift the powdered sugar. If the powdered sugar is lumpy, sift it before adding to the ingredients to create a smoother texture.
  • Place in the refrigerator before using. This will help the frosting to firm up and make it easier to pipe.
  • Taste the frosting. Give it a try and see if it needs more vanilla or cinnamon based on your preference. If you love cinnamon, add an extra teaspoon for a full tablespoon in the recipe.
  • Use an electric mixer. I suggest using a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, but you can use a hand mixer. You can also use a wooden spoon but it will take longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to do if the frosting is too thick or thin?

If your frosting is too thick, gradually add milk until it’s the consistency that you prefer.  If your frosting is too thin, add in more powdered sugar until it’s the consistency that you prefer.

How long does the frosting last?

This frosting is best used immediately but you can refrigerate it in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Do I need to refrigerate the frosting?

Yes, this frosting needs to be refrigerated. It can stay at room temperature for 1-2 hours when serving. However, if serving outside, be careful of warmer temperatures.

Can I freeze the frosting?

It has a high fat content, so it is perfect to freeze. Place in a freezer container up to 3 months. When ready to use thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

I don’t recommend this. Margarine has a higher water content than butter and will change the taste and texture.
